Olivia Rodrigo’s Unraveled Tour: How Pyrotecnico Makes It Rain on Cue

Midway through “the cure,” the rain starts. Olivia Rodrigo stands center stage as water falls over her and her white dress comes apart, revealing a red corset dress underneath. Then the rain stops. Exactly when it should.

The moment debuted September 25 at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford, Connecticut, on opening night of Olivia Rodrigo’s Unraveled Tour. Within hours, fan videos were all over social media. It anchors the show’s Winter act and puts the tour’s title on stage in a single image.

The dress is the work of designer Hussein Chalayan. The rain effect is HYDRA-STORM, a touring rain system from Luminous Show Technology, brought to the stage by Pyrotecnico.

How the HYDRA-STORM Rain Effect Works

HYDRA-STORM puts rain on cue. It can fall as a light drizzle or a full downpour, and it starts and stops instantly.

That clean start and stop is the whole trick. No drips before the moment, none after, and a dry stage waiting for the next song. For a reveal built entirely on timing, that matters as much as the water itself.

A Stage Rain Machine Built for Touring

HYDRA-STORM is easy for crews to set up and run, and it’s compact enough to load into a new arena night after night. Rain heads about three feet long link together to cover any width the stage calls for.

Rain indoors is a production challenge as much as an effect. The water has to be staged, cued, caught, and cleared before the next song starts. Then it all happens again in a different city.

Pyrotecnico’s Special Effects on the Unraveled Tour

HYDRA-STORM is new to Pyrotecnico’s lineup. It builds on the team’s past work with Luminous’s SHOCK-WAVE water cannons, and the Unraveled Tour puts it to work night after night.

The rain isn’t the only effect in the show. Pyrotecnico also runs low-lying fog, confetti, and a single Stadium Shot III blast.

Taking a new effect out on tour of this size means the artist trusts us with one of the biggest moments in her show and we don’t take that lightly.  said Bob Ross. “HYDRA-STORM is new for us, so we put in the work until the timing was second nature. Now it lands the same way every night, in every arena.”

Bring Your Moment to Pyrotecnico

The Unraveled Tour runs 86 dates across North America, Europe, and the UK, wrapping in Barcelona in May 2027. If you have tickets, watch for the rain.

HYDRA-STORM is an impressive gear, but the gear can’t hear a song. A rain system can start and stop on a dime. Someone still has to know which dime. Too early and the reveal is spoiled. Too late and the moment has passed. Getting it right takes a crew that knows where the music is headed and has spent years landing effects on the beat in arenas, stadiums, and theaters across the country.

For touring productions, Pyrotecnico is one call for concert special effects. Water effects, cold spark, low fog, confetti, pyrotechnics, and drone light shows are designed, tested, and run by the same team. A production manager gets one partner to plan with and one crew to count on from load-in to load-out.
